Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

What is PIP?

Personal independence Payment (PIP) helps with the extra costs of living with a long-term health condition or disability.

PIP replaced the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for disabled people aged between 16-64.

If you are awarded the higher rate mobility part of PIP, and have at least 12 months left, you’re eligible to apply for the Motability Scheme.

How long does PIP last?

Your decision letter will tell you how long you’ll be awarded PIP for. The DWP should write to you 14 weeks (around 3 months) before your aware is due to end, reminding you to make a new claim.

It can take the DWP a long time to process a new claim so it’s a good idea to make a new claim before your old one ends. You can apply up to 6 months before your current claim ends. This will prevent any break in your PIP payments while you wait for a decision on your new claim.
