Should I use a dash cam?

The tiny cameras can be a good way to record your journeys or can be very helpful if you're involved in an accident that wasn't your fault. But how useful can a dash cam really be?
A 'dash cam' is a small video recording device that you can install into any vehicle which can record both video and audio of everything that goes on around you as you drive. Although the name may suggest that you fix this camera to your dashboard, you would typically attach the device to your rear view mirror to ensure it gets a good view through the windscreen.

Having a dash cam fitted to your vehicle is perfectly legal, however, it is not legal to mess with it whilst you're driving. Much like mobile phones, you must be pulled over, parked up with the engine turned off before adjusting your dash cam. If you are caught making adjustments whilst driving you may be dealth 3 points to your licence or a £100 fine. This is why it's neccessary to ensure it is properly fixed into place into a position that does not obstruct your view of the road whilst driving.

They are often fitted using either double sided tape or a suction cup. The latter can provide more flexibility as it can be moved later on, where as the double sided tape fixes into place and is a more permanent solution. The power lead is then trailed around the edge of your windscreen, and then plugged into the electricity supply, which can be the cigarette lighter or a USB input. Don't worry too much about your car battery however, as the small device will only use a minimal amount of energy.

If you're wondering whether a dash cam could effect your insurance premium, you are most likely better off asking your insurer out right if this is something that they take into consideration. Dash cams can often signal to insurance companies that you are a confident and careful driver. Alternatively, the footage recording from your dash cam may be useful if you are involved in an accident and need to prove you are not at fault. The insurance company will appreciate the physical evidence, may help you with your claim quicker and could also protect your no claims bonus.
