Top tips to protect your car

Whilst car theft reports rise during the festive season, here's just a few top tips to secure your vehicle and deter thieves.
Keep your keys safe
Modern car keys can easily be cloned. Even if the thief is outside your home and the keys are inside your house, aslong as they are within a certain proximity to the keys they will be able to clone them and take your car very easily. Always keep your keys hidden and out of sight, never leave them in the hallway or by your front door, and to prevent cloning keep them secure in a metal box.

You should also never leave your vehicle unattended whilst the keys are inside. It can be tempting to leave the car running to warm the car up before a journey or to de-mist the windows, but the risk simply isn't worth it.

Install a tracker
If your car is of high value, you may want to consider investing in a car tracker. This will notify you if/when your car is moved, and where it is moved to. This means, if it's stolen the police should be able to recover it.

Hide valuables
This is a very obvious tip. Don't give theives more reasons to want to get into your car. Ensure your vehicle looks unappealing by removing or hiding anything that holds a lot of value or anything that has personal details on.

Use a steering wheel lock
People have been using steering wheel locks for many years and although it's not the most 'high tech' solution, it could be enough of a deterrent to stop a thief from trying to take your vehicle.

Check for recalls
If you have a newer car, you will be aware that manufacturers are keen to send out updates for the cars computer and to send out recalls to ensure the cars safety. Sometimes updates will need to be done in dealerships and others can be done by you via the internet. Make sure to keep your software up to date to ensure the safety and security of your caris working as it should.

Reset passwords
Modern cars often connect to an app created by the manufacturer and connect to the internet, which means that the cars system could be hacked into. Be sure to update your password regularly to prevent the risk of hacking.

Park in a secure place
The best place to park your car would be in a locked garage. However, most people don't have a garage with the space to put a car away. Another alternative would be to park on a drive way which has lockable gates. You could also place CCTV camera's and motion sensor lights on and around your property to further deter theives.
